European Parliament shortlists future AMLA Executive Board members

Candidates for the future EU Authority for Anti-Money Laundering (AMLA) Executive Board were heard in camera at the European Parliament on Wednesday, 19 February.

After the European Commission created a shortlist following a call for applications, coordinators from the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) decided on their preferred candidates, according to a parliamentary source.

Another parliamentary source indicated that the coordinators from the ECON and LIBE Committees have agreed on a list of five candidates out of the eight candidates shortlisted. In terms of their nationality, they are Danish, Irish, Lithuanian, Spanish, and German.

The coordinators then informed the AMLA General Board, which will propose the appointment of five members.

Public hearings will be held during the next phase, which is scheduled for Thursday, 20 March, as long as the proposal is received by that time. After the European Parliament’s decision, a decision will be taken by the Council of the EU, which will appoint the members.

In January, the Ecofin Council appointed Bruna Szego as chair of AMLA (see EUROPE 13561/2). (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
