'European Board for Media Services' will ensure implementation of Media Freedom Act

The European Board for Media Services held its inaugural meeting on Monday 10 February. Established by the European Media Freedom Act, this independent advisory body at EU level will both monitor the application of the law and assist the Commission in regulating the media (see EUROPE 13394/32)

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, welcomed the Media Board’s implementation of “the European Media Freedom Act and ensuring that media in the EU – be it traditional or digital – is independent and pluralistic”.

The Media Board will, for example, issue opinions on national measures likely to affect the operation of the media, on cases of concentrations in this sector and on measures to protect the internal market against non-European media in terms of manipulation or foreign interference.

The Commission has specified that the Media Board can also be asked directly by the media for its opinion. The Media Board must then inform the Commission of its opinion. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
