Recommendations of six European business organisations for future horizontal strategy on Single market

In a joint statement published on 11 February, BusinessEurope, Eurochambres, Eurocommerce, DigitalEurope, European roundtables for industry and SMEunited are calling for concrete action to strengthen the Single market, as the European Commission prepares its horizontal strategy for the Single market in June.

This strategy should contain a clear timetable for all the actions that need to deepen the Single market, according to the six organisations, which list services, digital, energy and market access for certain products as areas for action.

The future horizontal strategy must also involve more effective implementation of European rules, and therefore compliance with them by the Member States. “The Commission must re-intensify infringement proceedings against Member States breaching Single Market rules and reassert its role as guardian of the Treaties”, say the interest groups.

They also focus on reducing the regulatory burden, which must be done with a clear plan and quantifiable targets.
