06/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a press release issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Thursday 6 February, the European Union announced that, through the BESPA-FOOD project implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), it was supporting the Sri Lankan coconut industry with a ten-year strategic plan aimed at transforming it into an export powerhouse worth $2 billion. The Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure organised an initial workshop with key stakeholders to develop a roadmap. A select committee will meet in mid-February to finalise the next steps. The EU’s BESPA-FOOD project provides technical expertise to improve productivity, quality and added value. The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) will draft the roadmap, focusing on supply chain efficiency and the ability to meet growing international demand. (PLD)
