EU mobilises €422 million to support deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure

On Thursday 6 February, the European Commission announced that it had selected 39 innovative projects across the EU for the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure, with funding of €422 million provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF).

With this selection, AFIF will support around 2,500 electric recharging points for light vehicles and 2,400 for heavy vehicles along the European TEN-T road network, 35 hydrogen refuelling stations for cars, trucks and buses, the electrification of ground handling services in eight airports, the greening of nine ports and two ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities.

The current call for proposals, launched on 29 February 2024, has just completed its first evaluation round. The next deadline will be 11 June 2025, when the remaining budget of around €578 million in funding will be available for successful proposals.
