On Monday 13 January, the European Commission launched a consultation on the model to be used for national nature restoration plans (see EUROPE 13433/2). The public consultation is open until 7 February.
The regulation sets a target of restoring at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
Promised during the discussions about this ground-breaking legislation adopted in June 2024, the standardised model should guide Member States through a list of planned measures, a timetable for implementation and a reminder of the financial resources that are required.
This uniform model will enable the legal alignment of national plans and will make it easier to compare and assess them, said the European Commission in its press release. According to the Commission, the standardised format will also reduce the administrative burden on stakeholders and other businesses.
This would represent a “pioneering example of the use of digital planning tools”, which also bears the advantage of enabling the re-use of information that has already been collected for other legislative acts. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
