EU lagging behind in wind farm construction, says WindEurope

On Friday 10 January, the WindEurope association announced that not enough new wind farms are being built in Europe.

In a press release, it points out that wind energy accounted for 20% of all the electricity consumed in Europe in 2024, but that the EU needs to build 30 GW of capacity per year to achieve its 2030 targets. In 2024, it built just 13 GW of new (onshore) wind power stations.

According to the association, growth is hampered by delays in connection to the grid, the slow pace of electrification, and the fact that most governments are not applying the new EU rules on authorisation, despite Germany’s success in this area.

WindEurope also points out that 500 GW of wind power projects are awaiting assessment of their grid connection applications, and that Europe is not extending its electricity grids fast enough.

It also highlights that European funding is slightly down on 2023 (19 GW financed in 2024, compared with 21 GW in 2023) and that offshore wind investment has fallen considerably. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
