16/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 15 December, the President of the Italian Council, Giorgia Meloni, announced her intention to relinquish the presidency of the ‘Party of European Conservatives and Reformists’ (ECR), which she has held since 2020 (see EUROPE 13211/45). “Now that the [European] elections have taken place, I think I have fulfilled my duty and I want to announce that I am going to resign as President of the European Conservatives”, she said in Rome at the annual festival of her party, Fratelli d'Italia, according to ANSA. In her opinion, the ECR party deserves to have a full-time President. Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is tipped to succeed her. After the Italian delegation, the Polish delegation is the second largest delegation in the ECR group in the European Parliament. (MB)
