Brussels, 16/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 16 December, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, announced that the European Foreign Affairs Ministers had agreed to suspend the visa liberalisation regime for diplomatic and service passports. The European Commission should make a proposal along these lines by the end of the year, she added, following the Foreign Affairs Council. Such a proposal requires a qualified majority of Member States to be accepted. While several Member States have already adopted national sanctions against Georgian officials, Mrs Kallas acknowledged that there was no unanimity for such measures at European level. “Many ministers wanted to do more. Many said that they also needed to see how the situation evolved and that they were prepared to take additional measures”, she explained. (CG)
