European Commission adds Air Tanzania to list of airlines banned in European Union

The European Commission banned Air Tanzania from EU airspace when it updated its Air Safety List on Friday 13 December. This list identifies airlines that are subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the EU because they do not meet international safety standards.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has identified safety concerns and has decided not to grant Air Tanzania a Third Country Operator (TCO) licence. On Friday 29 November, EASA decided to lift the suspensions imposed on the two Pakistani airlines Airblue Limited and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as TCOs.

The list now includes 129 airlines, 100 of which are certified in 15 States, due to inadequate safety oversight by the aviation authorities of these States. Twenty-two airlines certified in Russia, as well as seven individual airlines from other States, are included on the list based on serious safety deficiencies.

Finally, Iran Air (Iran) and Air Koryo (North Korea) are listed because they can only serve the EU with specific aircraft types.
