12/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 12 December, the president of the Social Democrat group in the European Parliament, Spain’s Iratxe García Pérez, said that her political family was ready to discuss “all subjects” with the Christian Democrat group, provided that these discussions took place within the pro-European coalition at the centre of the political spectrum. But she warned her Christian Democrat counterpart, Germany’s Manfred Weber: “The EPP group cannot impose its agenda on us” and submit ‘take it or leave it’ proposals, for example on support for the European car industry (see EUROPE 13543/11). At the end of November, the EPP, S&D and Renew Europe groups signed a political agreement setting out cross-cutting political priorities for the 2024-2029 legislature, which led to the approval of the ‘von der Leyen II’ Commission (see EUROPE 13528/1).
