12/12/24 (Agence Europe) – PAN Europe has announced that it will bring an action before the Court of Justice of the EU, on Thursday 12 December, following the European Commission’s refusal in September 2024 (see EUROPE 13480/4) to review its re-approval of glyphosate for 10 years, until 2033. Glyphosate has been re-approved “despite significant uncertainties and knowledge gaps”, in a “clear violation of the precautionary principle”, according to the NGO network. The EU favoured industry-funded studies downplaying “evidence on genotoxicity, neurotoxicity and environmental impacts” over “peer-reviewed evidence”, criticised PAN Europe. This herbicide is associated with serious risks, including cancer, reproductive disorders and neurological diseases. The EU is therefore failing in its duty to protect public health, says the NGO network. MEP Christophe Clergeau lent his support to PAN Europe’s “legitimate and necessary action” on social network X.
