10/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 10 December, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) published a study showing that patents concerning the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in electricity grids have increased sixfold since 2018. The EPO explains that the number of patents in smart grid technologies now exceeds those relating to physical networks and storage technologies. This is due in particular to policies that encourage smart meters and electric charging points. In terms of the origin of patents, Europe, Japan and the United States had the strongest presence between 2001 and 2023, but China has also started to take its place since 2022.
