02/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 2 December, the European Commission approved the addition of two new agricultural products to the list of protected designations of origin (PDOs). ‘Τσαλαφουτι / Tsalafouti’ is a white spreadable cheese from Greece with a soft, creamy texture and a mild aroma reflecting the local herbs eaten by the animals that graze freely in the area. This cheese has been made since the 17th century at the south-central end of the Pinde mountain range, mainly from sheep’s milk. ‘Gaziantep Melengiç Kahvesi’ is a Turkish coffee substitute made by roasting and grinding the seeds of terebinths, a tree that grows naturally in the mountainous regions of the province of Gaziantep in south-east Turkey. These new names will be added to the list of 3,637 agricultural products already protected. (LC)
