At the end of November, the Europe Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA), a network of some twenty national innovation support agencies, unveiled its 2024 compendium of essential initiatives to be taken at EU level to enable innovative start-ups to flourish and grow within the internal market.
In the regulatory sphere, the network points to opportunities that are still being under-exploited for developing policies that are favourable to the development of start-ups such as ‘legal sandboxes’ and ‘digital first’ initiatives designed to reduce the bureaucratic burden.
Faced with fierce competition from China and the United States, ESNA stresses the importance of retaining and attracting to the EU talent capable of taking risks by creating innovative start-ups, particularly in STEM disciplines and clean technologies.
Recommendations are also made on how to facilitate investment in start-ups, for example through the creation of specific stock exchange platforms and the revision of agreements linked to European funding.
