EU to send mission to Georgia

The High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, announced, on Monday 18 November, that the Europeans would be sending a “technical mission” to Georgia “to study carefully what has happened” during the elections, which were allegedly marred by irregularities.

We all want the same thing for Georgia: to get back to the European path. And this will require efforts. We will send a mission to Georgia. We will discuss the irregularities and the election will have to be investigated. And the government has to produce decisive changes through concrete actions”, he stressed at the end of the EU ‘Foreign Affairs’ Council.

Mr Borrell also announced that the head of ODIHR’s election observation mission in Georgia would be invited to present his assessment of the electoral irregularities to the Member States. “We will inform the meeting (of ambassadors from the Member States meeting within the Political and Security Committee) so that the Member States know what we are talking about when we mention irregularities in these elections”, added Mr Borrell.
