19/11/2024 (Agence Europe) – The LIFE Natura@night project is developing street lighting plans that are less harmful to bird species and other animals in Macaronesia, a group of Atlantic islands to the west of Africa that includes the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) said on Tuesday 19 November. Light pollution, which has increased with the urbanisation of these islands, can disorientate and exhaust birds, including those that use the moon and stars for guidance. This is why the LIFE project maps the extent of light pollution before drawing up lighting master plans with the municipalities. 66 LED bulbs, which minimise blue light emissions, for example, have been installed in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, Madeira. The project advocates the installation of lighting directed towards the ground rather than the sky. (FS)
