European Left calls on European Commission to impose an arms embargo on Israel

15/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – In a letter addressed to the President of the European Commission on Tuesday 15 October, Walter Baier, the President of the Party of the European Left, called for an arms embargo on Israel. “On behalf of the Party of the European Left, we demand the immediate imposition of a total arms embargo on Israel and the cessation of arms transfers”, he stressed. Such a decision is left to the Member States, which must act unanimously. The President said that it was “unacceptable” for European public funds to be used to finance security and defence projects “that directly benefit Israel’s war machine”. “This not only contradicts the fundamental values of the EU but also implicates it as an accomplice to these massive human rights violations”, he added, calling for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
