BusinessEurope publishes roadmap for supporting SMEs in EU

On Tuesday 15 October, BusinessEurope, the organisation representing businesses in the EU, published a roadmap proposing measures to support the development of SMEs on the continent. The absolute priority is better legislation, according to the organisation.

Between 2017 and 2022, the European Union has imposed a total of 850 new obligations on companies, representing more than 5,000 pages of legislation which add extra burden for companies”, laments BusinessEurope.

This is why the EU must reduce reporting obligations and stop “seeking to micro-manage companies” or proposing “unnecessary” revisions of existing rules, according to the roadmap.

Another way of taking greater account of the impact of legislation on SMEs is to improve the quality of ‘SME tests’. According to BusinessEurope, the Commission must think about the impact of its proposals on SMEs from the earliest stages of the process.

The sector is also calling for a greater role for the ‘SME envoy’, who must have a real say in the European Commission’s decisions.
