The European Union played a leading role at the 46th annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO), held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from 23 to 27 September. The moratorium on cod fishing in the North (including Newfoundland and Labrador) has been lifted.
On the basis of a joint proposal from the EU and Canada, NAFO has adopted a measure concerning the fishery for ‘Northern cod’. NAFO reopened this fishery, which had been closed for more than 30 years, and drew up a revised sharing agreement. The EU’s share has been increased. NAFO has also increased fishing opportunities for 3M cod (over 6,000 tonnes for the EU).
A new methodology for managing the Greenland halibut stock has been adopted.
For redfish (Divisions 3L and 3N), the EU supported an approach that took due consideration of scientific uncertainties about the status of the stock (reduced catches, but no closure of fisheries).
