01/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Union activated its civil protection mechanism in Greece on Tuesday 1 October, as numerous fires raged across the country. Greece had activated this mechanism the day before, an initiative that enabled the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre to mobilise three fire-fighting aircraft. Drawn from the EU’s emergency reserves, these aircraft come from Croatia and Italy. This is the third time that Greece has benefited from the mechanism since the start of the summer. The Copernicus system has also made it possible to provide local authorities with emergency satellite mapping to monitor the spread of the fires. (FS)
