SECTORAL POLICIES / Competitiveness

For CEA-PME, portfolios of European Commissioners are not sufficiently focused on competitiveness

The Confederation of European Entrepreneurs (CEA-PME) is denouncing inconsistencies in the portfolios of the European Commissioners-designate. “European SME and Mid-Caps fear that the focus is not clearly enough on relaunching economic growth and for a realistic industry policy”, said the CEA-PME in a press release on Tuesday 1 October.

The portfolios of the Commissioners-designate are highly “fragmented”, according to the confederation, which also feels that certain priorities overlap unnecessarily.

The objective of reducing the regulatory and administrative burden should not, however, be confined to Valdis Dombrovskis’ portfolio, say European entrepreneurs.

They also find it regrettable that the decarbonisation objective guides all the others, in the mission letters distributed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. “As far as we understood it, neither has Mario Draghi ever called for a decarbonised and circular economy”, they argue. In their view, the ‘Green Deal’ alone cannot be taken as a growth strategy. With this in mind, the CEA-PME is concerned that the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 90% by 2040 “would make all efforts useless”. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
