26/09/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 26 September, the European Commission initiated infringement proceedings by sending a letter of formal notice to 26 Member States for failing to transpose into national law the provisions of the revised Renewable Energy Directive (see EUROPE 13296/32) relating to the simplification and acceleration of authorisation procedures. These measures concern both renewable energy projects and the infrastructure projects needed to integrate additional renewable energy into the electricity system. After coming into force in November 2023, the directive set a deadline of 1 July 2024 for the legal transposition of these provisions. Only Denmark met the deadline. The other Member States now have two months to respond and complete the transposition. If they fail to do so, the Commission may issue ‘reasoned opinions’, which is the second stage of the infringement procedure. (PLD)
