Josep Borrell deplores, once again, China’s continued material and diplomatic support for Russia

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, discussed the current geopolitical situation and the main challenges facing the EU and China with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, on Wednesday 25 September, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Borrell reiterated his belief that China’s continued material and diplomatic support for Russia was fuelling Russia’s war against Ukraine and was a direct threat to European security.

He also expressed concern at the increase in Chinese exports of dual-use goods and articles, which were helping to “build Russia’s military industrial base”, according to a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Mr Borrell went on to call for a de-escalation of tensions in the South China Sea, mentioning the recent actions of the Chinese coastguard (see EUROPE 13473/11).

Finally, the two parties reiterated their shared commitment to a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
