On Wednesday 4 September, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, published data on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, one of the 17 SDGs adopted by the UN in 2015 to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development worldwide, which aims to guarantee quality education for all by 2030.
In the EU context, pursuing this objective focuses on improving basic education, higher education, adult education and digital skills.
With regard to early childhood, 93.1% of children were enrolled in an educational programme in 2022, a figure that has risen since 2017.
In addition, 43.1% of young people aged 25 to 34 had obtained a higher education qualification by 2023.
Also in 2023, the proportion of adults with basic digital skills rose slightly to 55.6%, a 1.64% increase compared to 2021 (53.9%).
However, there are still problems, particularly in relation to the PISA test: for example, 29.5% of 15-year-olds are struggling in maths, compared with 22.9% in 2018.
