EU-funded Cultural Relations Platform demonstrates impact of creative sectors on social cohesion and economic resilience in Ukraine

On Tuesday 30 July, the European Commission announced the publication of a report summarising a series of activities aimed at supporting the cultural and creative sectors in Ukraine, an initiative that has been part of the EU’s support since the Russian war of aggression began.

The document ‘Cultural and creative sectors in Ukraine: resilience, recovery and integration with the EU’, written by culture and creativity experts Anna Karnaukh and Kateryna Kravchuk and coordinated by the Cultural Relations Platform between January and April 2024 at the European Commission’s request, describes the key contributions of these sectors to Ukraine’s social cohesion and economic development.

The project involved an online survey with 498 respondents from across Ukraine, two online meetings with representatives of the cultural and creative sectors (CCS) and a final workshop in Brussels with 65 key participants.

The aim of these activities was to assess the state of the CCS in Ukraine, focusing on their integration into the EU and their potential to contribute to the country’s recovery.

The results show that, despite war-related issues, the CCS play a major role in community resilience. Over 66% of respondents have kept their jobs.

The report lists innovative practices and makes recommendations for strengthening cultural governance, developing the skills of players and promoting an integral approach to regional development.
