Recapitalisation of SAS, European Commission approves modification of commitments made by Denmark and Sweden

On Tuesday 9 July, the European Commission announced that it had given the green light to a modification of the commitments submitted by Denmark and Sweden as part of the European Commission's decision of 29 November 2023 concerning the recapitalisation of Scandinavian Airlines System AB (SAS).

This recapitalisation, worth around €833 million (SEK 9.5 billion), was approved by the European Commission on 29 November 2023.

However, SAS, which was in difficulty, had not managed to turn its situation around. In 2022, it was forced to file for insolvency in the second half of 2022.

On 28 June, under the guidelines for rescuing and restructuring non-financial companies in difficulty, the Commission approved the Danish and Swedish plans to grant SAS aid of up to €1.3 billion (SEK 15 billion) to enable it to restructure (see EUROPE 13443/13).

However, as the recapitalisation instruments had ceased to exist, Denmark and Sweden had notified the Commission of their requests to waive the commitments made in this context. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
