EU’s innovation performance is improving, but divides persist within Union

On Tuesday 9 July, the European Commission published the European Innovation Scoreboard 2024 (EIS), an annual report providing data and comparisons of the innovation performance of all the Member States, 12 neighbouring European countries, including Moldova for the first time, and 11 global competitors.

The EIS enables policy-makers, researchers and stakeholders to gain a better understanding of the research and innovation sector, its strengths and weaknesses. It comes with an interactive tool for creating customised comparisons.

The EU’s annual innovation performance as a whole has improved at a rate of 0.6% from 2023 to 2024.

However, the EIS shows that, despite a slight reduction, disparities in innovation performance persist across Europe.

Between 2023 and 2024, Estonia moved up the rankings, becoming a Strong Innovator, while Belgium, although retaining its fifth place in the rankings overall, experienced a slight deterioration in its qualification, moving from Innovation Leader in 2023 to the Strong Innovator category.
