On Tuesday 2 July, the European Commission announced that it had authorised Bulgaria to grant restructuring aid of up to €25.51 million (BGN 50 million) to the postal operator Bulgarian Posts.
Following authorisation from the European Commission in May 2023 (see EUROPE 13183/25), Bulgarian Posts, which was in difficulty due to inflation in particular, received a rescue loan from the Bulgarian State of around €26.5 million (BGN 50 million).
The restructuring aid is in fact the conversion of this rescue loan into equity.
In addition, this aid supports a restructuring plan aimed at restoring the long-term viability of the Bulgarian postal operator, while limiting distortions of competition.
The Commission found that the measure complied, in particular, with the Guidelines for rescuing and restructuring non-financial undertakings in difficulties. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
