On Tuesday 2 July, the European Commission authorised two crops of genetically modified (GM) maize for food and feed use. Another crop of GM maize has had its authorisation renewed.
These authorisations cover the import of these crops for use in food and animal feed. Growing these GM crops remains banned in the EU.
The European Commission states that the scientific assessment of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is favourable. According to EFSA, these GM maize varieties are as safe as their conventional equivalents.
Authorisations issued are valid for 10 years. Any product derived from these GM crops will be subject to EU rules on labelling and traceability, adds the Commission, which “had a legal obligation to decide on these authorisations after Member States did not reach a qualified majority either in favour or against the authorisation at the Standing Committee and at the subsequent Appeal Committee”.
