European Commission authorises €3 billion in Swedish aid to support carbon capture and storage industry

On Tuesday 2 July, the European Commission announced that it had authorised a Swedish scheme worth €3 billion (SEK 36 billion) to support and encourage the carbon capture and storage (CCS) industry.

Eligible companies will be selected through a competitive process. The first auction is scheduled for this year.  To take part, eligible companies will have to carry out an activity in Sweden that emits CO2 of biological origin and implement projects with a capture and storage capacity of at least 50,000 tonnes of CO2 of biological origin per year.

The scheme, which aims to support the development of a CCS value chain in Europe, will run until 31 December 2028.

In addition, the European Commission has indicated that the measure will be subject to an ex-post evaluation, aimed in particular at verifying the effectiveness of the competitive tendering procedure. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
