02/07/24 (Agence Europe) – WWF is calling for EU rivers to be restored under the EU Nature Restoration Law, at the launch of its ‘Rivers2Restore’ report on Tuesday 2 July. Eleven river restoration projects, covering 2,200 km of waterways, have been selected for this WWF project. Restored rivers can limit the impact of floods, by absorbing excess water, and droughts, by replenishing groundwater. “The EU Nature Restoration Law requires the Member States to reconnect at least 25,000 km of Europe’s rivers by 2030”, points out Lan Wang-Erlandsson, a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University. In particular, WWF is calling on the Member States to include these projects in their restoration plans. (FS)
