On Monday 10 June, more than 1,300 civil servants and employees of European Union institutions signed an open letter calling on EU leaders to commit to a settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that respects the fundamental values on which European integration is based.
“The EU’s continued apathy to the plight of the Palestinians runs the risk of indirectly contributing – through inaction – not only to the spread of polarising narratives, but also to normalising the rise of a world order where it is the sheer use of force, as opposed to a rule-based system, that determines state security, territorial integrity, and political independence – or the lack thereof”, they stress in their open letter.
Their requests to the EU are as follows: - officially call for a ceasefire in Gaza; - officially call for the release of all hostages; - condemn the crimes and human rights violations committed by all parties to the conflict; - guarantee an end to arms exports to Israel; - review political, economic, scientific and technological cooperation between the EU and Israel so that it is genuinely conditional on respect for human rights and democratic principles.
