14/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Union of European Federalists (UEF) believes that the European Council should propose that the European Parliament elect Ursula von der Leyen of Germany, the lead candidate for the European People’s Party (EPP), to head the European Commission, in accordance with the ‘Spitzenkandidaten’ political process. In a press release issued on Monday, 10 June, the organisation adds that in parallel, Mrs von der Leyen should negotiate with the other European political parties in order to form a pro-European majority. The UEF stresses that these pro-European parties should make their support for the European Commission presidency conditional on a convention to reform the European treaties being convened. (MB)
