EU Employment and Social Affairs Ministers to discuss recommendations of ‘Letta’ report on 20 June

The EU27 Ministers for Employment and Social Affairs will in turn examine, on Thursday 20 June in Luxembourg, Enrico Letta’s report on the future of the internal market, and more specifically on the social dimension of the internal market.

On the basis of a steering note, they will discuss the “role of labour market and social policies in creating a sustainable Single Market for all”.

The note stresses that the findings of the Letta report are entirely in line with the ‘La Hulpe Declaration’ approved last April on the future of the European Pillar of Social Fights, which aims in particular to reduce poverty and inequality and promote a fair and equitable transition to climate neutrality.

The note sets out the Italian’s main recommendations in the social and employment fields, ranging from the accessibility of housing and the fight against regional imbalances, to better coordination of social security and the pursuit of digitalisation, greater consistency in the implementation of the directive on the posting of workers and the strengthening of the European Labour Authority.

The report also recognises the fundamental role of social dialogue and calls for an ambitious transposition of the minimum wage directive. It advocates “a robust system of safeguard clauses, transition periods and other tools to prevent and mitigate the potential negative effects of integration into the Single Market” for countries due to join the EU.

Ministers will be invited to give their views and identify priority actions.
