After debating the new challenges facing the European Union (EU) and its territories following the European elections on 9 June, on Thursday 13 June the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) reaffirmed the commitment of its member regions to democracy, the prosperity of the EU and the security of their territories.
The CPMR notes the particularly tense climate in which the elections took place, partly due to the various crises facing the EU, with the indirect consequence of “the rise of extreme right-wing anti-European movements”. In response, “the regional leaders reaffirmed the need for a stronger Europe, with the essential objective of strengthening cohesion”.
The CPMR is drawing the EU’s attention to the EU’s future Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the arrangements for post-Next Generation EU (NGEU) policies, and is accusing the EU of misunderstanding the role of funds and programmes. This is why “the CPMR is calling for renewed policies that are more effective, closer to citizens and in line with the EU’s fundamental principles”, notably full respect for the principle of subsidiarity and the alignment of the MFF with European and national policies.
