The European Commission adopted, on Thursday 6 June, proposals for a new EU/Cape Verde fisheries agreement. The new protocol covers a period of five years from the date of the provisional application (see EUROPE 12430/23).
The aim of this agreement is to grant fishing opportunities to EU vessels in the fishing zones located in Cabo Verde waters, in accordance with scientific advice and the recommendations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
The new protocol authorises the following EU vessels to fish for tuna in Cabo Verde waters: 24 tuna seiners (14 for Spain and 10 for France), 22 surface longliners (Spain: 17; Portugal: 5) and 10 pole-and-line vessels (Spain: 6; France: 3; Portugal: 1).
The EU’s financial contribution for the entire duration of the Protocol amounts to €3.9 million, or €780,000 per year, based on a reference tonnage of 7,000 tonnes (€350,000) and aid for the development of the sectoral fisheries policy (€430,000 per year).
