Transparency in climate progress at heart of COP29 pre-discussions in Bonn

The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, called on all parties, as part of a dedicated dialogue at the Bonn Conference on Monday 10 June, to submit their first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) this year, as a compass for achieving the Paris climate goals.

Andorra was the first country to submit its report last year, followed by Guyana just recently.

Preparing these reports is not just a matter of ticking a box. The knowledge acquired will help countries to make informed choices, set ambitious targets and release the necessary funds to support them”, explained Mr Stiell.

The purpose of these reports is not only to report on progress made, but also to reinforce the ‘Nationally Determined Contributions’ (NDCs) expected by 2025 (see EUROPE 13422/1).

Later this month, the UNFCCC secretariat will publish new reporting tools for the enhanced transparency framework, including monitoring of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Each country starts this process from a different point, but we cannot allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good”, stressed Mr Stiell, reiterating the importance of submitting “the best possible plans” before COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November, as requested by the COP Presidency. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
