10/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 9 June, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro pledged his support for former Socialist Prime Minister António Costa in his bid to become President of the European Council. “If António Costa is a candidate for this post, the Portuguese government will not only support him, it will do everything it can to ensure that his candidacy is a success”, his successor, a member of the EPP party, said on Sunday, according to Reuters. The Socialist Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, is also being considered for the post. In Portugal, the Socialist forces scored well on 9 June, winning 8 seats and leading with over 32% of the vote. In Denmark, the Socialists also won 15.6% of the vote, behind the Greens. (SP)
