On Monday 10 June, the European Commission announced the activation of the European Union’s emergency aid reserve for Afghanistan, where more than 15 million people are acutely food insecure and “pockets of famine” are feared.
Nearly €126 million has been made available to support the EU’s humanitarian partners working inside Afghanistan. More than €11 million will be used to meet the needs of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and a further €11 million has been allocated to humanitarian organisations in Iran.
“Aid will focus on food assistance, shelter, healthcare and access to water and sanitation. Up to €14.5 million has been earmarked for education in emergency situations, as 8 million children and adolescents need help with their education, including 1.4 million girls who have no access to secondary school”, said the Commission in a press release on Monday.
In 2024, total humanitarian aid for this crisis will amount to almost €150 million. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
