European Commission activates new digital system to combat climate change

On Monday 10 June, the European Commission activated the Destination Earth (‘DestinE’) project, dedicated to combating global warming by modelling environmental data.

With DestinE, the European High Performance Computers (EuroHPC), including the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani, Finland, where the project was activated, are now responsible for simulating the effects of climate change and extreme weather phenomena in order to strengthen the EU’s preparedness.

According to the Commission, DestinE uses modelling capabilities based in particular on the development of artificial intelligence.

The initiative also represents a key element of the European data strategy, consolidating access to important data sources across Europe.

The launch of DestinE is a true game changer in our fight against climate change. DestinE will provide us with a highly accurate twin of the Earth which can help us predict future scenarios”, said Commission Vice-President Margrethe Vestager at the launch.

The DestinE project was officially launched in 2022 by the European Commission, in partnership with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).
