On Tuesday 4 June, the European Patent Office (EPO) announced the finalists for the Young Inventors Prize 2024 category of the European Inventor Award 2024. This prize rewards young inventors aged 30 or under who contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal.
The finalists are: - Valentyn Frechka, a 23-year-old Ukrainian who has invented a method for converting dead leaves into recyclable materials; - Rochelle Niemeijer, a 29-year-old Dutchwoman who has developed a portable test kit that uses artificial intelligence to assess water quality; - Khaoula Ben Ahmed, Ghofrane Ayari, Souleima Ben Temime and Sirine Ayari, a group of Tunisian female inventors, aged between 27 and 28, who have created a wheelchair using cutting-edge technology.
The ranking of the three finalists will be determined by an independent jury, including former finalists of the European Inventor Award and the Young Inventors Prize. This ranking will be revealed at a hybrid ceremony on 9 July in Malta, where the winners of the European Inventor Award (see EUROPE 13411/24) will also be announced.
