On Tuesday 4 June, the European Commission announced that it had authorised, under the guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection and energy, an Italian scheme to support the construction of new “renewable” electricity production capacity using innovative technologies that have not yet reached maturity. This includes geothermal energy, offshore wind energy, thermodynamic solar energy, solar energy produced by floating installations and other technologies.
This new capacity should supply a total of 4,590 MW to the Italian electricity system. They should enter service within 31 to 60 months.
The scheme will be financed by a levy on end consumers’ electricity bills. The aid will take the form of a two-way contract for difference and projects will be selected through a tender procedure.
The scheme will run until 31 December 2028. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
