On 29 May, Anne Sander MEP (EPP, French) criticised the lowering of mycotoxin thresholds in cereals decided at European level.
At the beginning of April, the European Commission adopted two regulations concerning mycotoxins, natural contaminants produced by certain moulds and fungi on several types of plant.
These two texts, which will come into force on 1 July, lower the maximum levels of mycotoxins permitted in unprocessed cereals.
“The new levels planned for cereals will be untenable for farmers, who will have no choice but to sacrifice part of their harvest or increase their use of plant protection products at a time when they are seeking to reduce their usage”, Anne Sander commented.
In a letter addressed to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Ms Sander called for a review of these new maximum permitted levels or alternatively “the adoption of derogations in order to return to the thresholds previously in force”.
