04/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – In a statement issued on Monday 3 June and speaking on behalf of the European Union, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum, on her “historic election as the first female president of Mexico” in the general elections held last Sunday. He praised the Mexicans’ “strong attachment to democracy”, despite the fact that nearly thirty candidates were assassinated during the local elections; he also re-emphasised the EU’s desire to further strengthen its strategic partnership that respects human rights and the rules-based multilateral global order. By giving Ms Sheinbaum almost 60% of their votes, Mexican voters have chosen political continuity by keeping in power the ‘National Regeneration Movement’ (Morena) of the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been in power since 2018.
