30/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 May, the EU Council adopted the so-called “Right to Repair” Directive. The provisional agreement was approved by the European Parliament during the plenary session on 23 April, with 584 votes in favour, 3 against and 14 abstentions (see EUROPE 13397/19). This directive creates a set of tools and incentives aimed at making repair more attractive to consumers, in order to combat overconsumption and planned obsolescence. This includes making it compulsory for manufacturers to repair products that are technically repairable under EU law, and making available a repair form containing information on the process (timescales, prices, etc.). The directive must now be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will come into force 20 days later. (IS)
