30/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 May, the EU Council decided that the EU will sign an agreement with Serbia on the operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), according to a press release. This agreement will enable the EU and Serbia to organise joint operations involving Frontex and the Serbian border guards. It will also enable Frontex to deploy border management teams in Serbia and help Serbia to manage migratory flows, combat illegal immigration and tackle cross-border crime. It will replace the current status agreement between the EU and Serbia based on the former Frontex Regulation, which authorised joint operations only at Serbia’s border with the European Union. The agreement, which has yet to be signed, will have to be approved by the European Parliament. (SP)
