As the parliamentary term draws to a close, on Wednesday 29 May the European Disability Forum published a report on the work of the European Parliament’s Disability Intergroup over the last five years. Among its major achievements was the rapid adoption of the directive on the European Disability Card and European Parking Card.
The Intergroup also encouraged the European Commission to develop an ambitious Disability Rights Strategy 2021-2030 and initiated projects such as the AccessibleEU European Resource Centre. It also promoted inclusion in the European Parliament and supported the first Disability Rights Week.
Members have guaranteed the inclusion of people with disabilities in the European Structural and Investment Funds and ensured that the directives on equality and combating violence include accessible services.
The Intergroup also played an important role in the AI Act and the Mental Health agenda. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it ensured the accessibility of digital ‘passes’ and organised emergency meetings with the European Commission.
