MEPs approve new European rules on collection of air passenger data

25/04/2024 (Agence Europe)The European Parliament approved, on Thursday 25 April, two new regulations requiring and harmonising the way in which airlines collect and transmit pre-flight passenger safety information, known as API (Advanced Passenger Information) data, by 492 votes to 33 with 10 abstentions, and 438 votes to 35 with 60 abstentions (see EUROPE 13374/34). Airlines will have to systematically collect and transmit passenger data, such as the name, date of birth, nationality and passport details, to the relevant authorities before boarding, and keep them for 48 hours. The rules will apply to flights arriving from a third country and, for law enforcement purposes, to flights departing from an EU country. Member States that have chosen to apply Passenger Name Record (PNR) rules may choose to apply ‘API’ rules to certain flights within the EU.
