On Wednesday 24 April, the European Commission announced that it had sent letters of formal notice to Estonia, Poland, Slovakia, Cyprus, Czech Republic and Portugal for failing to formally designate their national coordinator for the Digital Services Act (DSA), which has been mandatory since 17 February.
Estonia, Poland and Slovakia have not yet made their designations, while the other three Member States “still have to empower them with the necessary powers and competences to carry out their tasks, including the imposition of sanctions in cases of non-compliance”, explains the Commission.
Last March, during a discussion with members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market, Rita Wezenbeek, the Director responsible for platforms and the DSA, stated that eight national coordinators were still needed.
In early February, MEPs called on the Commission to point the finger at the lack of independence of the authority designated by Hungary.
The six named States have two months to remedy the situation. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
